If You Want to Make An Impact, You Have to Do The Work

September 13, 2013

Today’s tip is about getting comfortable (and excited about) the journey you chose to take when you decided you have to make an impact.

Use the Stairs

The kid who inspired this series of blog posts couldn’t reach the machine as it was, so he had to stand on a step to get the height he needed. That’s one thing he did right, because that single step got him where he needed to be in order to do the next right thing (or at least attempt the next right thing).

Sometimes you need a little more help to get where you need to go — it’s not just one step; it’s hundreds. Regardless, with even a single step, we get closer and closer to where we want to be. And if you enjoy the process, you’ll be in a positive place before you know it.

I once met a very successful entrepreneur who told me his philosophy on life — “Inch by inch life’s a cinch.Yard by yard life is hard.”

Coming from the music business, I often hear comments from fans who think that successful musicians “came out of nowhere.” Having been in this business since 1995 and working with hundreds of artists over the years, I can tell you this is never the case.

There’s a saying in the music business that “every overnight sensation takes seven years.”

This is true not only for musicians, but people want to make impact as well. Anybody who affects people in a big way and has staying power to continue to affect people in a big way doesn’t develop the skills to do that on a fluke. You develop skills to have impact by going through the needed process, step-by-step, without skipping steps, because it’s in this part that the needed knowledge is acquired.

Is it painful? Sometimes.

Will you think about giving up? Sometimes. Perhaps more than sometimes.

The process of getting where you need to go in order to make big impact will push you in ways you can’t think of. You’ll be moving along toward your goal just fine when — WHAM! — you get hit with doubt, or criticism, or resistance of some kind.

Are you going to let that stop you? Unfortunately, most people do.

Whether you’re just starting your journey to impact or several months (or even years) in, I hope you’ll keep this message in mind. The people who impact us, whether through writing, music, or other manifestations of ideas and thought, didn’t just happen upon the ability to do that. Those who make impact had to do the needed work, taking things step-by-step, one step at a time, in order to get where they are.

Final Thoughts on Building a Foundation for Success

The journey never ends…

Like education, there is no “final” step. There is always another level. And taking what you do to that next level is why this blog exists.

Thank you for taking the time and energy to read this series. Putting these 10 strategies/philosophies into place will make what you learn here 100 times more powerful.

I’m very excited to be doing this project as it will give me an opportunity to share knowledge from my work in the music business that will help you in your business. The techniques I’ve used to help build the careers of musicians will absolutely help expand what you’re doing.
